Now Open: Rhode Island's Only Woman-Owned Softball Training Facility

Updated: Sep 21, 2019

PRESS RELEASE: The Backstop Softball Training Facility will give softball athletes ages 7-20 access to training from collegiate level softball players in a softball-first environment—for the first time ever in RI.

Warwick, RI: On May 4, 2019 The Backstop Softball Training Facility celebrated its Grand Opening or—Opening Day. This is the only woman owned softball training facility in RI to offer training to athletes across the state. Other facilities focus on baseball first, are only for private teams, or don't offer quality women instructors who have actually played the sport professionally or in college. The Backstop aims to change this trend, and shed light on a sport growing exponentially in popularity statewide and nationally.

On May 4, 2019 at 12pm, The Backstop hosted their current players and clients, as well as family, friends and the community at their facility on 1160 Bald Hill Rd. Warwick, RI 02886. Food, refreshments, music, games, photo ops and opportunities to meet the coaches and players will all be on deck.

Owned and operated by Emily Johnson, Rhode Island native and Rhode Island College Alum, The Backstop is the next step in her career as a collegiate softball athlete, travel softball coach, private softball instructor and assistant softball coach at schools like LaSalle Academy and Bay View Academy. With a team of other skilled instructors, and a state of the art facility, The Backstop is equipped to deliver top-of-the-line training close to home.

Says the owner, “We are so lucky to be a part of this community and share our skills and passion for the sport with local athletes. I’m building the backstop to create a space that I wish I had growing up. One with instructors who have actually taken the steps I aspired to in the sport. A place where girls not only feel welcomed but acknowledged and challenged to their max. I’m excited to see my players grow and achieve their goals in softball and in life.”

About The Backstop: The Backstop is an indoor training facility where women of all ages come to learn and enhance their skills in softball. We help coach and train physical softball skills, and more importantly, we support mental fitness by fostering a culture that encourages mental toughness, genuine sportsmanship and competitiveness. We specialize in hitting and pitching training from collegiate-level softball players. We also use our space as a multi-use facility that offers top of the line training equipment, machines, technology and coaching staff to enhance the skill set of any softball player that walks through the door.
